Military:  US Navy WWII  (18 Feb 1944 – 27 Nov 1945)

Cause of Death:  (Murder) He was run over by his truck while his current wife, Diana, was driving.  We all know that she hit him intentionally, but she was charged with manslaughter and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.  She only served about 9 and was released.  Mr. Nick died of internal injuries on his way to the hospital.

Notes:

There is a discrepancy with his year of birth.  He always said that he didn’t know what year he was born in, but all of his documentation says in 1918.  His sister Lelia was born in 1918 and appears in the 1920 census, that was documented on the 27 & 28 of Feb 1920, as being 2 years of age.  Claude is not on the 1920 census.  Claude does appear on the 1930 census as being 10 years of age.  It is very likely that Claude went through his entire life, 2 years older than he actually was.  I would say that he was born 8 Apr 1920, which would have made him 88 at the time of his death.

Cause of Death:  Her death certificate says Uterine Cancer.  She was diagnosed with Uterine cancer, but it was in the beginning stages.  There was no autopsy because of her age and her recent diagnosis.  She was a severe diabetic and was a double leg amputee.  She also suffered from congestive heart failure several times throughout many years.

11/18/25 - 11/01/13 Belle Brokaw, surrounded by her loving children, found her way to Heaven on All Saints Day. Belle was born in Palmetto LA to Jimmy and Virginia Charles, (nee McGee). After graduating from Palmetto High School, Belle earned her degree from the Port Arthur Business School.

Belle married Barry Brokaw in 1954 and they went to Europe where they embarked upon a great adventure. Belle's happy spirit and lust for life flourished in Europe, especially Italy and England. While living in London, Belle discovered her passion for antiques and later opened her own business in Houston dealing in fine English antiques.
Belle was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend.

She is loved and will be missed by her son Scott Brokaw, her daughter Carla and husband Ron Harris and their children Jeff Harris, Laura Harris, and Brian Phares (Belle's grandson), and loved nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Now Belle is dancing in the clouds in Heaven, keeping a watchful eye over all of her cherished loved ones.

Obituary:

Leonville- Memorial Mass for Jimmy Charles, age 76, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, February 20, 2012, with visitation from 10:00 am. -1:00 pm. in St. Leo Catholic Church in Leonville, LA. Interment will follow in the Waxia Methodist Cemetery.
Father Mike Arnaud will celebrate the Mass.
Jimmy was a resident of Leonville. He passed away on Monday, February 13, 2012 at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Lafayette.

Jimmy loved spending time with his family and friends. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force, which was his greatest accomplishment. In his leisure time, he enjoyed raising wolves, hunting, fishing and spending time outdoors. He was an avid gun collector. He had many friends and enjoyed joking with all of them. He was loved by everyone and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his loving wife of 26 years, Sue Stelly Charles of Leonville, his children; Ricky Charles and wife, Jennifer of Leonville, Shane Bourgeois and wife, Mandy of Arnaudville, Patti Charles of Port Allen, Lisa Grimmette and husband, Reggie of Port Barre, Casey Charles Sellers and husband, Travis of Krotz Springs, Sarah Ducote and husband, Chad of Ponchatoula, Mia Charles and husband, Brody of Leonville, sister , Iris Charles LeBlanc and husband, Allen of Leonville, fourteen grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Preston and Aline Badeaux Charles, one infant brother, Daryl James Charles, and one grandson Jacob Benjamin Grimmette.

WASHINGTON ~ Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 16, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. in Melancon Funeral Home of Opelousas Chapel for Julia Hawkins, age 80, who passed away Thursday, July 7, 2022 at her residence in Washington.
Interment will be in Upper Waxia Cemetery in Waxia.
Pastor Carlton Benton, pastor of Living Glory Church in Lafayette, will officiate at the services.
Mrs. Hawkins was a native of San Jose, Costa Rica and a longtime resident of Washington, LA where she raised her family.
Survivors include her children, Chantal Fontenot and her husband, Derek, Christian Hawkins and his wife, Christine, and Michael Hawkins and his wife, Christine, all of Washington; a brother, Rojelio Tamayo; half-brothers, Manuel Araya and Roberto Araya; a sister, Maria Elana Odio; half-sisters, Zuli Araya and Elsa Araya; grandchildren, Michael Hawkins, Roxanne Frischhertz, Katherine Hawkins, Mary Hawkins, Whitney Pitcher, Erika Hawkins, Brandon Fontenot, Jessica Martin, Jacob Hawkins, Natalie Huss, Alisa Hawkins, and Benjamen Hawkins; and her great-grandchild, Samuel Martin and three great-grandchildren on the way.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Dayton Hawkins; a son, Maurice Hawkins; and her parents, Fernando Tamayo and the former Carmen Araya.

Obituary:

Opelousas- Funeral services for Mr. Harold Archie Woods, Sr, age 91, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 3, 2011, in the LaFond-Ardoin Funeral Home Chapel, followed by interment in the Upper Waxia Cemetery. The Reverend Pete Smith will celebrate the Mass.
Mr. Woods, who was a native and resident of Waxia, died on Monday, May 30, 2011 at his home surrounded by his family.
He proudly served his country as a member of the 3539th Army Air Corp in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Upon his return home, Harold worked as a farmer, a cattleman and retired as a Louisiana Meat Inspector.
Survivors include his ex wives, Louise Dejean Woods and Patricia Sylvester Woods; sons, Harold A. Woods, Jr. of Washington, LA, Marion Lester Woods, II and wife Jane Woods of Brisbane, Australia, William H. Woods, Sr. and wife Erica Leigh Ball Woods of Washington, LA; daughters, Ouida Louise Woods and Christina Katherine Woods both from Washington, LA; five grandchildren, Claire Woods, Kitty Woods, and Hannah Woods all of Brisbane, Australia, and William H. Woods, II and Evelyn Grace Woods both from Washington, LA.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Carl Frank Woods and Alice Nolan Woods; brothers, Shelby Woods, Ned Woods, Leo Woods, Marion Lester Woods,and wife Ida Duckworth Woods; sisters, Virginia Woods Taylor and husband O.H. Jack Taylor and Jesse Woods England and husband Fred England.
